The incredible Lombardia

In the heart of Arona, a charming town overlooking Lake Maggiore, an old vessel is permanently moored along the waterfront, instantly catching the attention of passers-by. Many stop to admire it, yet few realize that it is a genuine symbol of elegance and power in lake navigation: the Lombardia, the largest and final paddle steamer ever built for Lake Maggiore.

Launched in 1908, the steamer could accommodate up to 700 passengers and was considered the flagship of the lake's fleet. During the First World War, it was converted into a hospital ship, providing space for approximately 1,000 soldiers. Even today, it retains much of its original charm, standing as a reminder of an era when grand steam-powered vessels played a central role in transportation and daily life on the lake.

Today, the Lombardia has found a new purpose and has been transformed into an excellent restaurant, where guests can enjoy wines from the Cellagrande winery. The winery itself, located about 80 km away, is also well worth a visit. It is housed within a beautifully preserved 13th-century Benedictine monastery, a place rich in history and atmosphere. Its winemaking focuses on quality and showcases some of Piedmont's most representative grape varieties, including Erbaluce di Caluso DOCG, Nebbiolo, and Carema, one of Italy's most historic and prestigious wine denominations. The result is a collection of elegant, terroir-driven wines that perfectly complement an experience combining history, scenery, and outstanding flavors.
